The benefits of membership include:
The VIOL. Members receive
four issues each year of this new publication, which replaces
the society's long-established newsletter. It provides news about
forthcoming events; listings of new CDs and publications; reports
of meetings; reviews; information about viol activities around
the world, and a range of material, including some more substantial
articles about viols, their music and its composers and performers.
Regular Meetings on viol-related
topics. There are usually three meetings each year, including
at least one in London. Speakers are authorities on their subjects
and meetings usually incorporate live music illustrations played
by members and others. At some meetings members' consorts are
coached by leading teachers.
Viol Hire. The Society
owns a number of trebble, tenor and bass viols (complete with
bows and cases) which are available for hire to members. Many
viol players find that this is an excellent way to start to learn
before they buy their own instrument.
Low Cost Sheet Music.
The society publishes a range of music
for viols, much of which is either unavailable elsewhere or
provides the opportunity to sample a composer's work without buying
a complete edition. Members are able to buy the society's Music
Editions at a substantially reduced cost.
Viol research. The
Society has a long tradition of publishing information and research
about viols and their music. 32 volumes of the journal "Chelys"
have been issued since 1969. The Society is now developing an
internet-based journal.
