Summer Course for New Viol Players (12 & 13 July 2008)

Who is this course for?
• Anyone who would like to be introduced to viol-playing
• Beginners on the viol
• Viol-players new to consort playing
What opportunities are offered?
• Try a viol and play in a Giant Consort - all in one weekend!
• Improve your technique
• Expand your consort experience
Participants who are new to the viol must be able to read music fluently. Instruments will be provided by the Early Music Shop
and the Music Department of Huddersfield University for use over the weekend.
Participants must be aged 16 or over.
How will the course be run?
The weekend will consist of a variety of playing activities. Complete beginners will start with an introductory ‘get to know your
viol’ class and progress to consort playing. More advanced players will be able to play in smaller groups, and/or double consorts
(with two players to a part). Everyone will play together in a Giant Consort.
When and where is the course?
• Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July 2008 at Huddersfield
University (Conference Centre, Storthes Hall Park, Kirkburton,
Huddersfield HD8 0WA. Full use will be made of the conference
facilities available at Huddersfield.
• All rooms are single and en suite.

What is the cost of the course?
• The total cost of the weekend course, which includes full board, is £150
• To reserve a place, please complete the application form and send it with your deposit (£50) to the administrator
• If you wish to arrive on Friday, an evening meal and B&B can be provided for an extra £55
Who are the tutors?
• Jacqui Robertson-Wade is passionate about teaching and playing viols. She is the author of Viol
Player, a tutor that has received international critical acclaim.
• Alison Kinder was awarded a Leverhulme Scholarship by Trinity College of Music where she studies with
Alison Crum. She is a founder member of the ensemble Passamezzo.
• Andrew Fowler is a tutor at the annual Northumbrian Recorder and Viol Summer School. He publishes
his own editions of early vocal and consort music.
• Lisa Colton a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Huddersfield, where she teaches courses
ranging from medieval musicology to the analysis of pop music. Lisa has taught viol for ten years, and plays bass viol in the
ensemble Arioso.
What else is scheduled for the weekend?
• The Early Music Shop (of Bradford and London) will bring a substantial quantity of viols and accessories which
will be available for purchase
• Julian Boby, viol maker, will give a talk on viol maintenance and set-up
• Tutors will give a concert on Saturday evening.
